Defence Force Transition Program

Defence provides transitioning members and their families with a broad range of programs to support transition to civilian life. This comprises specific support to develop and achieve your post-transition career goals including goals related to paid employment, retraining, volunteering and other forms of meaningful engagement in civilian life.

The Defence Force Transition Program is available to all permanent members of the ADF and continuous full-time Reservists (SERVOP C). You can access certain programs at any time in your career, with further programs becoming available once you commence transition from permanent service or SERVOP C. Most programs can continue to be accessed for up to 12 months after your transition, with some up to 24 months.

Referral to the Defence Force Transition Program is made by ADF Transition Coaches following close consultation with you based on your individual needs and circumstances. Factors such as your existing qualifications and experience, your personal transition goals and your progress in your transition are all considered.

ADF Member and Family Transition Seminars - You and your family can attend a seminar at any time in your career. We recommend you attend one every five years and no less than one year prior to your transition.

Visit the Seminar page for more information, and how to register to attend an upcoming seminar.

Job Search Preparation (JSP) Workshop – a two day workshop covering all aspects of managing your career, inclusive of building a resume to capture your military skills, applying for jobs and marketing your skills and experience to prospective employers. JSP is accessible to all permanent ADF members at any point during their career. Speak to your Transition Coach about online options that are available.

Career Transition Coaching (CTC) - provides specialist one-on-one coaching that can help you identify what motivates you, your skills and capabilities, career options to consider, develop an employment plan, develop interview skills, build a competitive resume, learn effective job hunting skills and adjust to the civilian environment. This coaching is modular so your transition coach will work with you to build a package of CTC to support your individual needs.

Career Transition Training (CTT) - access to vocational education and training to support your employment or meaningful engagement goals after you transition. Limited support may also be provided to help you with travel to attend training whilst still in service.

Personalised Career and Employment Program (PCEP) – focuses on providing intensive support to members at risk of not securing employment prior to or soon after transition. In particular, members are considered for this program where their financial security and ability to meet basic needs may be compromised as a result of unemployment.

Transition for Employment (T4E) – provides long term vocational and career support to medically transitioning members with complex circumstances. See the T4E page for more information.

Partner Employee Assistance Program (PEAP) - provides funding towards initiatives to assist ADF partners with the immediate difficulties of finding employment when they relocate due to posting or their ADF partner is medically transitioning. See the PEAP page for more information.

Approved Absence (AA) - leave for transition related activities including house hunting, job interviews, transition related appointments and on-the-job experience (includes coverage for weekends and public holidays). AA can only be accessed whilst till in service.

Financial Advice – provides a contribution towards professional financial advice to assist you and your family in planning for your financial security after transition.
